Cracked Teeth Jacksonville FL
Cracked teeth may present many types of symptoms, including pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot and cold drinks/foods, or pain upon releasing bite pressure. It is also common for pain to come and go, making it difficult to diagnose the cause of discomfort.
Chewing can cause movement of the cracked pieces of your tooth, and the pulp within the tooth becomes irritated. At the same time, when biting pressure is released, the crack can close quickly, resulting in sharp pain. Eventually, the pulp will become damaged and the tooth will consistently hurt, even when you are not chewing. It is possible that cracks can lead to infection of the pulp tissue, which can spread to the bone and gum surrounding the problematic tooth.

Types of Cracks
Craze lines
These are tiny cracks that only affect the outer enamel of the tooth. These cracks are more common in adults. These types of cracks are superficial and are usually of no concern.
Fractured Cusp
When a cusp becomes weakened, a fracture may result. The cusp may break off or be removed by a dentist. A fractured cusp rarely damages the pulp, so root canal is not necessary. Your dentist will usually restore the tooth with a full crown.
Treatable Cracked Tooth
This type of crack extends from the chewing surface of the tooth and vertically migrates towards the root. In some cases, the crack may extend below the gum line. It is possible for the crack to extend further into the root. Damage to the pulp is commonplace. In this case, root canal treatment is usually necessary. A cracked tooth that is not treated will worsen, resulting in the loss of the tooth. Therefore, early detection is essential.
Split Tooth
A split tooth is usually the result of an untreated cracked tooth. It can be identified by a crack with distinct segments. This type of tooth can never be saved intact. Yet, the position and extent of the problem will dictate whether any portion of the tooth can be saved. Sometimes, endodontic retreatment by the doctors and restoration by your dentist can be used to save a portion of the tooth.
Vertical Root Fracture
A vertical root fracture begins at the root and extends towards the chewing surface of the tooth. Unfortunately, they show minimal symptoms and may go unnoticed. Treatment involves endodontic surgery if a portion of the tooth can be saved by removal of the fractured root. Otherwise, the tooth will have to be extracted.

Five Star Service all the way! I presented myself as an extremely anxious patient who is very hard of hearing (I took out my hearing aides so I wouldn’t hear the noise of the drill…it freaks me out!) So, being that Dr. Varella and his assistant, Heather, are both soft spoken, they reassured me that they would speak louder..no problem. My anxiety regarding the procedure was lowered when Dr. Varella offered me nitrous to keep me calm. That, in addition to his continual caring approach made for a great “root canal experience”! My thanks to Dr. Varella and his staff for addressing my concerns and for providing professional, friendly, compassionate dental care with a great sense of humor! If you are in need of a root canal Varella Endodontics is THE place to go!

Overall I can’t say enough positive things about this office. Most medical or dental offices do not have this friendly or kind office staff. Dr Varella and his girls deserve more then 5 stars I’d give them 10 or more

I was in tremendous pain when referred to Dr. Varella and he and his team worked me in same day. By worked me in I mean they stayed late to see me. Dr. Told me the treatment was complicated but he would try. Both his assistant and he called me later that day and the next morning to see how I was. Treatment was successful and I was able to return to my dentist for follow up. Dr. Varella and his team were kind, caring and dedicated to my health. Highly recommend them.

Needed emergency treatment. Wow, was i taken care of! Everyone was wonderful. Though procedure (root canal) is a long process, Dr. Varella often stopped to ask if I was doing okay, did I have any discomfort or pain. I did not have any issues at at all. After the procedure, I was called me twice to make sure I was doing okay. Dr. Varella said to take ibuprofen if needed, especially up front. I took none; I did not need anything at all for pain control. Thank you Dr. Varella and staff. You guys are fantastic.

Due to Radiation treatment (35 treatments over 7 weeks) from Throat Cancer my teeth and gums were compromised. Dr. Varella did three root canals on my lower teeth and did a fantastic job and numbed it so I didn't feel any pain during the root canal therapy. He kept saying to me "Miss Karen are you doing ok?" just to make sure I was not in any discomfort. I would recommend him to my friends and family should they need any endodontics therapy

Patient Review by Tina S
Dr. Varella and his staff were very professional. Dr. Varella went above and beyond, spending an additional 45 minutes on a root canal that saved my tooth from extraction. The level of effort Dr. Varella put forth, shows his true character.....which is to be applauded....and his staff is a true reflection as well.
