After Endodontic Treatment
What should I expect after my endodontic treatment?
Endodontic treatment has now been completed. los canal raíz system has been permanently filled. However, your tooth is only sealed with a temporary restoration. A permanent restoration must be placed to protect your tooth against fracture and recurrent decay, and to reestablish function. Please call your dentist for an appointment. A complete report of the treatment, including radiographs (x-rays), will be sent to your dentist.
Included in your treatment is a follow-up examination to evaluate the progress of healing. This appointment will require only a few minutes of your time and there is no additional cost for the first check-up visit.
Your tooth is more prone to fracture immediately after endodontic treatment. You should chew on the other side until your dentist has placed the permanent restoration (usually a crown). Your restorative dentist and Dr. Varella will determine the appropriate restoration to best protect your tooth.
Postoperative Pain. Most patients experience significant improvement of their symptoms following root canal treatment. Sin embargo, in a few cases, patients may experience persistent discomfort or even flare-ups (increased pain), especially if you had pre-operative pain. Dr. Varella may prescribe pain medication, such as ibuprofen for a short period following your treatment.
What should I expect after my endodontic surgery?
We recommend absolute rest for the first 48-72 hours following the surgical procedure. This will allow the tissues to heal and decrease the possibility of post-operative pain and swelling. It is unusual to experience severe pain after the surgical procedure; but, you may expect some degree of swelling due to the nature of the treatment. You will receive prescriptions and written homecare instructions in order to make your post-operative healing as comfortable as possible.
In rare occasions, you may also develop bruising. It occurs more often in a patient with blood vessels weakened by diseases (such as scurvy), taking medications (such as aspirin, prednisone, and prednisolone), and aging. It can also occur in patients with absence or deficiencies in blood-clotting elements. Dr. Varella will discuss these issues with you during your surgical consultation.
Post-operative infection may occasionally occur. This usually requires just an office visit and examination. Muchas veces, placing you on an antibiotic for one week will take care of the problem.
