Root Canal

What Is A Root Canal?

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for dental implants or bridges. NOTHING IS AS GOOD AS YOUR NATURAL TOOTH!

The dental pulp (“nerve”) is located at the center of your tooth. It is a collection of blood vessels, nerve fibers, and cells that help to build the surrounding hard tissue of your tooth. Inflammation and infection of the canal (dental pulp) space can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks, or repeated dental procedures. The signs and symptoms of the canal inflammation and infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the jaws, sensitivity to temperature and/or spontaneous pain in the tooth, and pathological alterations in the bone surrounding the root tips. Radiographic images may also reveal “silent” (non-painful) infections in the jaws that most of the time are associated with infected roots.

Our caring staff is here to help you if you have any questions.

If you experience any of these symptoms, Dr. Varella will most likely recommend conventional (non-surgical) root canal treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. This injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned/disinfected and sealed. The root canal therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment requirements. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 90% to 95% of cases.

If your tooth is not amenable to endodontic treatment or the chance of success is unfavorable, you will be informed at the time of consultation or when a complication becomes evident during or after treatment.  You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and you probably will be comfortable returning to your normal routine.

What Happens After Treatment?

When your root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office for a follow-up restoration within a few weeks of completion at our office. Your restorative dentist will decide on what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment or microsurgery.

If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene.

How Much Will Root Canal Cost?

The cost associated with this procedure can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial tooth.

I was very nervous about getting a root canal. So nervous, I put it off for a year and even considered just getting the tooth pulled. I finally broke down and made an appointment. The day of the appointment, I was so scared. Upon arrival I was taken into the back by Ms. D. She explained everything and made me feel very comfortable. Dr. Varella came in and just put me more at ease! I have no idea why I was so nervous. Dr. Varella and Ms. D made my experience so comforting. They made sure throughout the whole process I was okay and not feeling anything. I would recommend Dr. Varella to everyone!

All of the staff were great at helping me to feel comfortable and put my anxiety at ease. I have never had a root canal before and my only experience with the dentist has been negative. Being that this was my first root canal I definitely was nervous. Dr. Varella was PHENOMENAL at completing my root canal and most of the procedure was completely pain free. I only felt a tiny bit of pain once. Thank you Dr. Varella and staff for making me comfortable and giving me such a great staff.

In general, root canals have a bad rep. I wasn’t looking forward to mine even though Dr Varella said they would make me as comfortable as possible. But my anxiousness was all for nothing. From start to finish, I felt nothing. Dr V continued to check if I was doing ok and I was fine. It seemed like it only took about 30 minutes (although it did was probably closer to an hour). After heading home, i had no pain during the rest of the day or the next day - didn’t even need to take any meds. I very much appreciate Dr V and his staff for making my procedure so easy and comfortable. I would highly recommend them!

Highly, highly recommend this office for any endodontal care. They are both highly professional and very personable very proficient and caring. I was referred to Dr. Varella by my dentist, which on its own, scared me a little bit. I was immediately at ease from my first encounter. All the staff and Dr. Varella treated me and my tooth issue as if I was the most important person in their world. While the procedure wasn't fun, Dr. Varella and his staff are!

AWESOME Dentist! I start off by saying I don't like going to the dentist (It's painful, all most all the time). But this "Man" was "Awesome". How do I describe him? 1. Excellent communication skills (explain everything) 2. He tried his best to make me feel comfortable (Root canal) Tho he tried to clam my fears, the anxiety was still there as always. (but he was aware of that and tried to clam me. (Awesome) 3. strong interpersonal skills 4. Best of all good manual dexterity skills (my mouth is small). Let's not forget that "Staff" (Awesome) they were professional and very pleasant. "Wow:. Will I go again to him ("yes") Do I feel less anxious about the dentist ("No"). He was wonderful and so was his staff. They (staff) is a reflection of a good dentist and business man.
